Now, to the children:

First born was Borach and first born if a boy was a Poritz … a king, a nobleman, to be treated with respect. They did a good job with Uncle Borach for he worked very few days in his life-time. All the brothers and sisters would come to him for advice, except when they were angry over previous advice that went wrong. In later years, when his own children were old enough to go out and work, they did and each payday they would bring home their earnings and Uncle would dole out what money he thought they would need until next payday.

Borach married Perleh while still in Schedrin. She came from Paritz, another village close by. She was an only girl, had two brothers, Yankel and Hillel. Perleh had never had to fend for herself and so she and Borach were a perfect match. The marriage agreement permitted Perleh and Borach to live with Bohbe and Zaydeh, rent-free, including three squares a day, thus allowing Perleh freedom to every day walk down one side of the village street, stopping to chat and gossip at each house and do the same up the other side of the street. She knew everybody and everything and that was carried on during her entire life. She was a huge woman, a most interesting character, who lived into her 90s. She had excellent caring children who kept her in grand style at the Morrowfield Apts., in Pittsburgh, she truly lacked nothing and yet when I would drop in to see her, it was always the same story. People are fortunate, they have good children. I would usually find her seated at her telephone table, the apartment house phone at one ear while she talked to one of her cronies in the building and the outside phone at her other ear while she talked to someone else who happened to call.

Borach and Perlehs first born was Mary. Mary came to this country when Uncle Borach came over for the first time. He came to get the feel of the land and then returned to Schedrin for Perleh and the remaining children and maybe Bohbe and Zaydeh … Im not quite certain about that.

Mary was in her teens when she came here. She worked as a seamstress. She met and married Morris Horovitz and they had one daughter, Sarabelle. Morris and Mary were grocers … very profitable … I can remember they were the first in the family to have had beautiful homes, furnished in excellent taste.

When they retired and while Sarabelle was in school, they took a motor trip to the West coast. There was an accident, Morris drowned. He was such a kind-hearted man, extremely knowledgeable. Mary is now gone.

Sarabelle lives in Los Angeles. She was married to Ralph Segal. Ralph died 91. They have two children, Gerry, married to Marvin Teitelbaum, an Opthalmologist, three sons, two in college, one a broker. Sarabelles son Buddy, a Neuro-Surgeon, married late in life to Sharon. They have a two-year old son. (90 - another son)

Back to Uncle Borach and Tante Perlehs progeny.

After Mary comes Sam. He was the kindest man one could ever meet. He would never deny Tante anything nor anyone else for that matter. She could call him in the middle of the night and no matter where he was - he would come to her.

Sam married Mollie and they had Jay, LeRoy and Dorothy.

Mollie was killed in an automobile accident. There was an affair at their synagogue in New Castle, Pa., where they lived and where their Luggage Factory was. Mollie was leaving after the affair, Sam following her, both laden with pans, containers, etc., to take home … kids came speeding around the corner, hit Mollie and that was it. Sam is gone, too. LeRoy married and had children(?) he is gone. Jay is married and has children.

Dorothy was married to a Rosenthal who died leaving her with two small children, Helene and Mark. Helene has been married several times, I think. She has children. Mark, not married, in and out of confinement. The last I heard he was in for good. Dorothy re-married a few years ago to Oscar … they live in L.A. (91 separated)

Back to Borach and Perleh

After Sam theres Bill, I think. Bill and Dad were Grocery partners for a short time during or after the depression. We werent too friendly with him or Uncle Borach for a while but it all got patched up … to suit Uncle Borach, of course. Dad was out and Bill was left with the store.

Bill married Bessie. They had two children, Jerry and Phyllis. Bessie died young. Phyllis was married to Tully Unger. They adopted Lynne. Lynne is married and has one daughter, I think. Phyllis hasnt re-married. Lynne is married and has one daughter, I think. Phyllis shared an apartment with Bill until his death. She now has a Condo in the same building as Rose Levinson, her Aunt, our cousin. (Phyllis died)

After Bill is Lil. Married Sammy Meyers, became very wealthy, jewelry, two children, Margie married to Lew (Tasty Yeast family) two children Tommy and ?. I think one is a dentist, the other law. Not married.

Eliott married to Ellie, both Jewelry Co. representatives. Three children, Amy and Steven, twins. Amy employed and Steven attending graduate school at Harvard. Peter attending Harvard, History Major and on first string football team. Their home is in Portola, Calif. Sammy is gone. Lil, 84 years old, bed-fast, speechless dying of a slow-growing brain tumor during this past year. Lil died.

Elliott and Ellie and Peter in town this week, on business (Sept. 9, 1987). Had dinner with them last night.

After Lil is Sidney … became an M.D. late in life. Had his appendix out and decided to become an M.D. He was in his 30s I think, when he went back to school, to get his High School credits and continued on. He and my Ed met in pre-med and Ed got into St. Louis but Sid flunked or couldnt get in so he went on to Scotland. I met Ed through Sid.

Sid married late to Ruth Graffman. They had one child, Judy, now married to Warren. They have four children, I think. One is adopted. Sid is gone and Ruth is in a Nursing Home … Alzheimer. Ruth gone.

After Sid is Rose. Rose married George Levinson who became an engineer. They had two daughters … Arlene married to Murray Rosenberg, son of David Rosenberg, Professor of Art, Carnegie Tech. Murray is now a retired Pathologist and a fine artist in his own right. They live in Connecticut. They have two children, Joel, an M.D. married to Dorothy and they have a son. Joel, too, is a fine artist and Dorothy is a sculptress. Arlene and Murrays daughter Sue Ann lives in Vienna. Is a member of the Opera Co. Rose says she has a magnificent voice. She is married.
