Back to Schedrin

Zlateh married Ishinaach, a former soldier in the Czar’s army. It was a match marriage. She had Sarah, Harry, Lee and Helen. I think only Sarah was born in Russia, the rest in Montreal, Canada, where they had emigrated.

Eventually, Mum and Dad brought Uncle Ishinaach over. He stayed with us and they obtained a job for him in the Westinghouse Plant in E. Pittsburgh. We then sent for Sarah and she worked in our store and stayed with us then we brought the rest of the family. They bought a dairy business, cows and a delivery route, horse and wagon, down the Hill (almost downtown, Pittsburgh).

Harry worked in our store, Sarah went to work at Campbell’s a small yard-goods store, Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh.

Sarah became engaged to Victor, who managed the little Eagle grocery store. That broke up and Sara went to visit her father’s sister in Linden, N. J. where she met her first cousin, Dave Rifkin. They eloped. They have a daughter, Ruth and twin sons, Arthur and Burton. Ruth is an R.N. widowed, re-married, divorced, is a grand-mother and she and her family live around the Elizabeth, N. J. area. Arthur lives in N. J., married and a grand-father. Burton is married to Dottie, has twins, boy, Adam and girl, Zia. They live in Tempe, Arizona. I’ve tried keeping in touch with them, had them all for dinner several times when Mum and Dad were alive but unless I call them, there’s no communication. Sarah and Dave live in Forked River, N. J.

Going back to Tante Zlateh. I loved her very much, she was such a warm, kind person and very understanding of children. She had a miserable life with Ishinaach (Rothman) in that he was an alcoholic….a crude individual. Maybe he was an alcoholic because I think he loved Tante very much but couldn’t live up to her expectations. He was much better off working for someone than being in business for himself. He was forever “falling off the wagon” while delivering milk, the horse and wagon would come home without him and the milk not delivered. So….they sold the dairy business and moved to Roselle, N. J. where Uncle went to work for some industry and Harry the mainstay of the family, went to work at a very young age, no education to speak of. The children, all but Lee, had no use for their father, they ignored him. Lee felt sorry for him and was always kind to him.

After Lee graduated from High School, they all moved to Brooklyn. Lee worked at the Cosmetic counter in Macy’s and Harry continued on with his ups and downs (elevator operator) and Uncle had a job as a doorman.

Tante became very ill and after surgery and much suffering (leukemia, I think) she died. Uncle went on his own and the three children moved to Manhattan and supported each other. Lee soon married, Harry Sverdlove, whom they had known in Canada. He was starting out as an electrician. He became very successful eventually. They had two children, Zolita (Lita) married to Donald Rapp, live in Pasadena, Ca., have two daughters, Erica, working as a florist and Melissa in Pre-Med. Lee was the sister I never had. I loved her very much from the time I was a little girl and she would tell me stories. She had a fantastic imagination and made up the most interesting tales. We always shared confidences and always had so much to talk and laugh about. We were good friends. I’ve never ceased missing her.

Helen married Meyer Stein. They had two sons, Noah and Jonathon. Both were on drugs, one now lives in California, I think, married, has four children, is a Born Again Christian. I don’t think anyone knows where Jonathon is. Lita has been in touch with the one in Calif. Helen and Meyer both gone.

Harry Rothman married late in life to Hilda. she was a diabetic and quite ill most of the time. When he retired, they moved to Florida. She was a bed-fast for a long time before she died. Harry re-married…he died a year or two ago.

In re-reading, I now remember….Lee must have taken after our Great Grandmother Rochel for when she, Helen and I slept together as kids when I stayed over at Tante’s, in the midst of her story-telling she would hop out of bed, re-smooth the covers, tuck us all in again, over and over again, while continuing to spin her yarn.

Andrew married twice, three children, I think. Lives in N.Y. Lee and Harry gone.

Back to Schedrin

As her sisters married and left home, only Mum and her Mother were left. Rochel was long gone, Dad had escaped arrest and left for America, promising to send for Mum.

Sorreh Riveh married a man from another village, sold her home and went with her new husband, leaving Mum to fend for herself.

Mum lived with Tante Zlateh for a while, working as a seamstress for Dad’s father. She wasn’t too happy living with Tante and Ishinaach. She went to live with her Mother and her new husband. That didn’t work out and she came back to Schedrin. She may have been taken in by Bohbe and Zaydeh because there is a family picture taken in Schedrin, I think, that shows Mum but not Dad.

Eventually, Dad who had made his way to N. Y. saved up enough money to send for her and she made her way to London and to Aunt Betsy. She didn’t have enough money to go to America and Aunt Betsy wasn’t in a hurry to send Mum off. She wanted Mum to stay in London and marry a butcher friend of hers.

There but for the almost grace of Aunt Betsy, who disliked Dad because he was A-Political and a troublemaker, Mum could have married a Limey butcher, Harry and I could have been tea drinkers and Subjects of the Crown.

Anyway, months later, Dad sent Mum money and she sailed for America. Mum, blushing profusely, once told me the story of a Sailor from the ship she came on, who found his way to Roselle, N. J. to Behnesh’s house (Lantzleit with who she was staying). He came to call on her. She didn’t enlarge upon the story….a memory….hers.
